GOD’s Sovereignty and Will/Our Will and Responsibilities

What does it mean to be sovereign? Or to be a sovereign?

SOVEREIGN, a. suv’eran. [We retain this babarous orthography from the Norman sovereign. The true spelling would be suveran from the L. supernes, superus.]

1. Supreme in power; possessing supreme dominion; as a sovereign ruler of the universe.

2. Supreme; superior to all others; chief. God is the sovereign good of all who love and obey him.

3. Supremely efficacious; superior to all others; predominant; effectual; as a sovereign remedy.

4. Supreme; pertaining to the first magistrate of a nation; as sovereign authority.

SOVEREIGN, n. suv’eran.

1. A supreme lord or ruler; one who possesses the highest authority without control. Some earthly princes, kings and emperors are sovereigns in their dominions.

2. A supreme magistrate; a king.

3. A gold coin of England, value 20s or $4.44

– Webster’s Dictionary of American English, 1828

Do you notice something missing from the definitions that many people include in their description of GOD being Sovereign?

Nowhere does it say “Supreme Controller” or “One Who Exercises Complete Control Over All Events”.

Almighty GOD IS Sovereign. There is no one equal to or above Him. HE IS The Supreme Authority. However, in GOD’s Sovereignty HE has created beings with free will; able to make their own decisions regardless of whether or not their decisions agree with His. These decisions that those created by Almighty GOD make all have consequences; good or bad, all decisions, all actions, and all words bear their own fruit. This is how Almighty GOD has set up all creation, including His Own Kingdom.

Almighty GOD IS indeed Sovereign over all, and yet, in His Sovereignty, He has given each of us the ability to make our own choices and speak our own words; and He has given us the responsibility for the choices we make and the words we speak.
